During the events of the first game, the Kushan race of the world Kharak began a probe to find and reclaim their home planet. The Kushan discovered the wreckage of the Khar-Toba, an interstellar transport, in an exceedingly desert on Kharak, and within found a galactic map etched on a bit of stone.
